Traveling from Overseas
Toyohashi city has no airport. You need to take trains from some airport. Since the public transportation system is complicated, make sure to check out the train map. You have three options to fly into Japan.
Chubu Centrair International Airport (airport code: NGO)
The Centrair Airport is the nearest airport from Toyohashi, located approximately 60 km to the west. It is an international airport offering connections to major East and Southeast Asian cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Singapore. There are also flights from Detroit (DL), Helsinki (AY), and Frankfurt (LH).
Centrair has an excellent connection to the railway service (Central Japan International Airport Station). The trains come every 15 minutes during daytime, and you need to change trains at Jingu-mae Station. It takes about 90 minutes, and the standard single fare is 1,630 JPY (an additional 360 JPY is needed for reserved seats).
Narita International Airport (airport code: NRT)
Narita Airport is the largest International Airport in Japan and one of the major international hub airports in Asia, serving plenty of flights. However, it’s quite far from Toyohashi. You can take Narita Express (NEX) or a bus to Tokyo Station. The train’s standard single fare is about 3,500 JPY, and the bus costs about 1,000 JPY. From Tokyo Station. There is also a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Toyohashi, single fares are 9,000 JPY (including reserved seat fee). It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo to Toyohashi.
Haneda Airport (a.k.a. Tokyo International Airport, airport code: HND)
Haneda Airport is the nearest international airport from Tokyo. There are flights from some countries of Asia, Europe, and US. Toyohashi is far from this airport as well. You need to take trains or buses.
There are trains and a bus to Tokyo Station. The trains’ standard single fare is about 600 JPY, and the bus costs about 900 JPY. From Tokyo Station, you take a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Toyohashi. Single fares are 9,000 JPY (including reserved seat fee). It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo to Toyohashi.
Public transportation in Japan is characterized by plenty of options. Therefore it is too complicated to understand. If you have friends who is living in Japan or know about it enough, we recommend you to talk them about your trip to Japan before the departure. For example, when you want a journey not only between the airport and Toyohashi Station but also any other major cities in Japan via Shinkansen/train for sightseeing, using Japan Rail Pass is effective for saving JPY.
For detail, please visit the official website of Japan Rail Pass.
